Accessibility statement

This accessibility statement applies to DfE Sign-in.

This website is run by the Department for Education. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

The Department for Education is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) version 2.2 AA standard, due to the following non-compliances (and/or) the following exemptions.

Non-accessible content

The content is non-accessible for the following reason(s):

  • Autocomplete attribute not present: It has been observed that the autocomplete is missing from certain form fields that collect user data. Specifically, the ‘Contact us’ page’s ‘Full name’ field, the ‘Create A DFE Sign-In’ page’s ‘Email’ field, and the ‘Access the DfE Sign-In’ page’s ‘username’ field are missing an autocomplete attribute. Users with mobility or cognitive issues can expend significant energy filling out personal details and if input fields can be programmatically determined, this allows them to complete forms easily and quickly. (WCAG: 1.3.5)
  • Page title is not descriptive: It has been observed that many of the scoped pages do not have a descriptive title, instead sharing the title ‘DfE Sign-in’. Users with cognitive disabilities and screen reader users benefit from being able to quickly differentiate pages and informative titles help them determine which page should be interacted with. (WCAG: 2.4.2)
  • Alternative text not present for non-decorative imagery: It has been noted the top logo on most tested pages does not contain an alternative text attribute, but an ARIA label. In addition, the logo found on the ‘Create a DFE Sign-In’, ‘MFA Code’ and ‘Password’ pages contains inappropriate alternative text which reads 'Organisation header logo'.

It is expected non-decorative imagery contains an informative alt attribute, the recognised attribute screen readers can interpret correctly and announce to a visually impaired user. (WCAG: 1.1.1)
